I arrived in Varanasi with a list and left having used none of it. The morning I stopped trying to cover ground — chai on the Assi steps, three hours, watching nobody around me check a watch — was the morning the city finally made sense. So I build your Varanasi days deliberately short: one boat at first light, one aarti, and long empty hours in between that you will thank me for later.

Places to visit
The main ghat, and the evening Ganga aarti.
Priests, lamps, bells and a crowd of thousands at around 6.45pm. We put you in a boat off the ghat rather than in the crush on the steps — you see the whole line of fire, and you can leave when you want to.
The southern ghat, and the best morning on the river.
Subah-e-Banaras begins around 5.30am with music, recitation and yoga on the steps as the sun comes up. Calmer than the central ghats and where we start most first mornings.

Not a sight so much as a fact of the city, and the reason many people come to Varanasi at all. We take you past by boat with someone who can explain what is happening. No photographs, no exceptions.
The Jyotirlinga at the centre of the old city.
Rebuilt in 1780 by Ahilyabai Holkar and opened up by the corridor project in 2021. Security is strict, phones are not allowed inside, and queues are shortest very early.

Ten kilometres out: the Dhamek Stupa, the Ashokan pillar remains and an excellent archaeological museum holding the lion capital. A calm half-day counterweight to the ghats.

Brass, silk, sandalwood and marigold in an alley barely two metres wide. Banarasi silk is best bought at the weavers' workshops in Madanpura, and we can arrange that instead of the tourist showrooms.
