Why I send you to Kerala
My family is from the coast, so Kerala is the one place I plan with an argument in my head. I stopped selling two-night houseboats after a trip in 2019 where the second day was plainly one too many — now it is one night on the water, then a village canoe through channels no houseboat can enter. The toddy shop lunch I send people to is the one my uncle takes me to, and it costs less than the tip at the hotel.

Places to visit
Channels, paddy bunds, and village jetties.
The heart of the backwaters. Alleppey for the wider channels and houseboats, Kumarakom for the bird sanctuary and quieter lakeside stays. We time your boarding for early afternoon so you moor before sunset.
Kerala's largest lake — best at dusk, from a canoe.
India's longest lake, 96km of it, ringed by paddy fields farmed below sea level. Go out in a small country canoe at dusk rather than a houseboat — you get the narrow channels and the birds.
Portuguese, Dutch and Jewish layers in one square mile.
Chinese fishing nets, a 1568 synagogue in Mattancherry, Dutch tombstones in St Francis, and a Kathakali theatre worth an evening. Best walked early morning before the cruise crowds land.
Tea combed across every slope the mist allows.
Colonial tea country at 1,600m — cool nights, walking trails between estates and a working tea factory tour that is genuinely interesting. Stay on an estate rather than in Munnar town itself.
Nilgiri tahr on grassland below Anamudi.
A high shola-grassland park below Anamudi, South India's highest peak. The Nilgiri tahr here are unusually relaxed around people. Closed for calving from February to March, so we plan dates around it.
Chembra Peak, Edakkal's Neolithic carvings, spice estates.
Kerala's quietest hill district: the heart-shaped lake on the Chembra trek, 6,000-year-old carvings at Edakkal, and cardamom and coffee estates you can stay on. Three hours from Kozhikode.

A tiger reserve built around a lake, so wildlife is watched from a boat or a bamboo raft rather than a jeep. The early morning raft-and-trek with reformed poachers as guides is the one to book.
Red laterite cliffs dropping straight to the sand.
A cliff-top strip of cafés above Papanasam beach, with a 2,000-year-old Vishnu temple at one end. Calmer and prettier than Kovalam, and an easy last two nights before flying from Trivandrum.
A working fishing coast, not a resort strip.
Marari is a fishing village first and a beach second — nets hauled in at dawn, no jet skis, and a handful of good low-rise properties set back in the coconut palms. An hour from Kochi airport.
